Milford AC News

As the New Year gets underway the vibrant local road race scene has already kicked off, with the hosting of the ‘Michael Murphy Sports 3km/5km’ in Letterkenny last Sunday. This race usually took the form of one 5 mile route, but this year the organisers revamped the event to give competitors the choice of the shorter 3km of 5km options. This seemed to drum up extra interest as up to 200 took part in both events.
Milford’s Paul Russell made a return to competition in his first outing since the Dublin Marathon. The Churchill man finishing 7th in the 5km event in 18:32.
On Sunday also, a fundraising 5km event was held in Clady, Co. Tyrone where over 300 took part. Philip McGovern was the club’s sole representative and in home territory, he continued his remarkable continuous improvement, running a pb of 20:12.
This Sunday the Lifford 5km series starts in Carrigans with a 10:15am start.
On 29th January the 2nd race takes place in Strabane and on 12th February the concluding race takes place in Lifford.
Finn Valley AC are not running their 5km series this year, instead – promoting one ten mile race “The Glenmore 10 Mile” on 5th February.
The 1st of the Milford AC 5km race will take place on Saturday 25th February followed by the 2nd race on Friday 24th March.
The Community Games 5km will take place on Friday 14th April.
Couch to 5km
The club couch to 5km programme 2017 will commence on Monday 23rd January 2017, running for 9 weeks, culminating with the 2nd Milford 5km series race on 24th March. The weekly programme will be as before, i.e. Monday, Wednesday and Friday commencing at 7:30pm sharp at the track around the football pitches at Moyle. Cost is €50.00 for the nine weeks. The fee will also act as club membership for the remainder of 2017.
Over the past number of years the Couch to 5km programme has been a catalyst for setting people on the road to improved fitness and achieving running feats previously thought unattainable, i.e. completing 10km, a half marathon and in some cases – a marathon.
Juvenile training has now taken a break and will resume on Tuesday 17th January 2017.
